OUR WORK

PURPOSE

Birmingham Promise was created to ensure that every graduate of Birmingham City Schools has a pathway to college and career success.

Though now an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, Birmingham Promise was launched in 2019 as a pilot program by the City of Birmingham under Mayor Randall Woodfin’s administration.

"Birmingham Promise is an investment in our young people and our future as a city. We’re building better pathways for students in Birmingham City Schools to go to college, get job experience, an fulfill their potential. When we support their success, we’re supporting the economic foundation that sustains everything we do as a city."

Randall L. Woodfin, Mayor of the City of Birmingham

THREE PRIMARY BENEFITS

  • Scholarships that cover any tuition gaps for graduates attending a public two- or four-year college or university in Alabama, with success coaches to help them navigate higher education.
  • Paid internships for high school seniors in high-demand industries.
  • Post-graduation apprenticeships that enable students to work, attend community college and earn valuable credentials.

In addition to the positive impact for individual students, Birmingham Promise sets out to serve larger goals for our community, such as improving graduation rates, closing achievement gaps and building a skilled workforce.

By creating pathways for students to go to college and gain career skills, Birmingham Promise is helping to secure their future – as well as our city’s future.
